Dr. Ricordi is the Stacy Joy Goodman Professor of Surgery and Director of the Diabetes Research Institute and Cell Transplant Center at the University of Miami. He is well-known for inventing the method to isolate pancreatic islets, for performing the first successful series of clinical islet allotransplants, and for Chairing the NIH CIT Consortium that successfully completed two FDA Phase 3 islet transplant trials. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the World Prize in Surgery (University of Geneva) and the Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award (American Diabetes Association).
Dr. Ricordi was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors and has been ranked as the world top expert in transplantation of insulin-producing cells to cure diabetes. He was recently appointed by the Italian Minister of Health to the Supreme Council of Health. He is Founder of The Cure Alliance and the Diabetes Research Institute Federation, promoting collaborative research worldwide. He has >1,000 scientific publications, >40,000 citations and a 95 H-index.
